The New York Times reports that Obama administration officials are assembling a team of "mystery shoppers" to evaluate patient access to physicians. The officials say that the initiative is designed to assess the shortage of primary care physicians, as well as internal medicine and family practice specialties. The mystery shoppers will attempt to make appointments and also to determine whether physicians are accepting patients with private insurance while turning away those in government health programs. Critics of the plan say that the money could be better spent by helping improve access to care, rather than spying on physicians.
